Get quality biochar from a sustainable source you can trust.
Aiding in soil amendment projects big & small
Incorporating biochar into your soil helps improve soil structure, moisture retention, and increases nutrient retention and availability for plants. Its porous structure provides a habitat for beneficial microbes, promoting overall soil health. Additionally, biochar helps sequester carbon in the soil, making it an environmentally friendly choice for sustainable gardening practices. Try Orchard Ridge Farm's premium biochar in your garden today and experience the difference for yourself!
What is Biochar?
Biochar is organic material that has been heated in a controlled process (pyrolyzed), resulting in an almost pure carbon structure that is highly resistant to decomposition. The unique structure of biochar has adhesive and ion-exchange properties, which can be visualized as biochar acting as a sponge, holding water and nutrients in the soil and making them available to plants. Our Biochar is made from forestry waste.
We are often asked if Biochar is just charcoal; while they are both created by pyrolyzing (heating organic material in the absence of oxygen), the difference is that biochar is created in a highly controlled process designed to create high levels of micropores that give Biochar its unique properties. Our Biochar is made from forestry waste in an environmentally friendly low-emissions process. As a result, our Biochar is not only good for your soil but also sequesters carbon and is good for the environment.
The Amazing Benefits of Biochar
Biochar is and acts very similarly in most respects to organic matter in the soil, except that unlike organic matter it does not decay, and lasts decades (and even centuries) in the soil. A name that better describes biochar would be “stabilized organic material”, but biochar is easier. While it is generally difficult and expensive to maintain soil organic levels over 4%, biochar effectively increases organic levels above this threshold, permanently.
Like compost or other organic material Biochar is most commonly used as a soil amendment to improve soil texture, water retention, nutrient retention, nutrient availability, and mild liming capacity. Though beneficial for nearly all soil types and regions, biochar is especially beneficial for Northwest soils, which tend to be acidic and heavily leached by wintertime rainfall. Biochar helps retain nutrients during the wintertime and then make them available to plants during the growing season, increasing fertility and reducing inputs. However, the greatest benefit of biochar is its persistence; biochar continues to persist and benefit soil for years (and even centuries). Other common uses of biochar include livestock feed supplement, manure management, and stormwater management.
Biochar is best pre-charged by incorporating into working compost for several weeks before application. Depending on the needs of your soil: lime, dolomite, rock dust, kelp meal, mycorrhizae and other amendments may be added, aiming for a 20:1 carbon-nitrogen ratio.
